Ang Lee has achieved the impossible: first Asian to win best director award at the Oscars

In his heyday, P “Ibu Mertuaku” Ramlee was probably only second to the legendary Akira “Shichinin No Samurai” Kurosawa as the greatest movie director in Asia.

Now Ang Lee has surpassed them both. Never mind that the movie he directed (Brokeback Mountain) is highly controversial.

To Aziz “Senario The Movie, Leftenan Adnan” M Osman (1999, 2000), Yusof “Sembilu II, 6 million dollar man” Haslam, Yusof “Tragedi Oktober” Kelana (1996), Yasmin “Sepet” Ahmad (2005), U-Wei “Perempuan, Isteri dan…., Kaki Bakar” Saari (1993, 2001), Deddy “Azura” Borhan, Shuhaimi “Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam” Baba (2004), Erma “Perempuan Melayu Terakhir” Fatima (1999), Teck “Spinning Gasing” Tan (2001), Badaruddin “KL Menjerit” Azmi (2002), A Razak “Cinta Kolesterol” Mohaideen (2003), Saw “Puteri Gunung Ledang” Teong Hin (2004), Bernard “Gol & Gincu” Chauly (2005), and *especially* Worod “Jaka Sembung vs Si Buta” Suma (1983) and B Narayan “Sumpah Pontianak” Rao (1958):

….forget Festival Filem Malaysia, or even Festival Filem Asia Pasifik, THIS is the one reference standard you’ll be measured against.

Some people would argue that Cannes Film Festival is of higher stature than the Oscars, but no one can argue that getting an Academy Award is the highest profile accolade in the world.

It’s like a writer winning the Pulitzer Prize, or a scientist winning the Nobel Prize.
