Vinod Sekhar: richest Malaysian under 40
At a mere 37, Datuk Vinod Sekhar is Malaysia’s richest thirtysomething with a fortune estimated at USD200 million (that’s more than RM700 million!).
He’s ranked the 16th richest Malaysian in 2006 by Forbes Magazine, just behind Tony Fernandez, 42 at USD205 million.
This is a case of son emulating father. In stark contrast to the rags to riches story of other Malaysian billionaires like Lim Goh Tong and Loh Boon Siew, Vinod came from rather intellectual background.
His father, BC Sekhar is the former head of the country’s government rubber agency.
Datuk Vinod is his youngest offspring.
He chose to earn his fortune from amongst other things, the same thing his father dabbled in – rubber. He is the founder and majority owner of privately held Petra Group. Among its many technologies, one of the most promising is involved in “green rubber,” a revolutionary process to cheaply and efficiently recycle used rubber.
The Petra Group is not just concerned about rubber – it is also involved in bio and industrial technologies, and multimedia.
What seems to be a common trait about successful young people like Datuk Vinod is that they are great entrepreneurs and seem to be able to make time to do many things (read = no lepak).
His academic backgroud is Molecular Biology. He’s the founder of Vincent Siefer Clothing Co, Founder, Sitavani Foundation; 1990, Founder, STI Group, apart from his current position.
He has presented a variety of papers related to youth, human rights and multi-racial development at various international conferences including: International Human Rights Conference, Brussels; Malaysian International Youth Conference for Unity, Kuala Lumpur; The Asia Europe Young Leaders Conference, Ireland; New Asian Leaders Retreat, Seoul, World Economic Forum.
He is the Chairman for Petra Foundation; Pelita Harapan; Sitavani Foundation.
He is the Co-Chairman for Innocent Child Appeal Fund Board.
He is Member of the Board of several Malaysian and international corporate charitable bodies.
He is Member of Young Presidents’ Organization.
He is the author of a book of poetry and of several plays, including “In the Mind’s Eye”.
He is married with 2 children, loves Cuban cigars and Mickey Mouse ties.

why has he been so low key ? Is it also true that he has given hald his shares to a charitable foundation. Was also told that the Petra Foundation educates thousands of students globally a year. Assuming all true – its seems amazing that the public has not heard of him, though a friend has met him and told me he’s quite charming and down to earth. Someone should interview him and find out.
I suggest you research the person with a bit more detail. You’ll find amazing similarities wit a certain Lebanese billionaire in the news recently. I wouldn’t just regurgitate what Forbes puts out. Put your best investigative journalistic skill to work and you may find a record of sorts.
Mr Mandarahus,
Why have you not responded to mya earlier post?
I thought it was just a suggestion from you, and that you did not expect a response.
Oh never mind
had negative experiences where he benefited from the 1999-2001 bubble and cashed in some money related to the rubber project .
