The world’s worst father

Several newsreports (see source) reported in April 2006 that a 45-year old Singaporean man was found guilty of raping 5 of his underage daughters, aged 12 to 15, resulting in 2 of them becoming pregnant, and was sentenced to 32 years jail and 24 strokes of the rotan. In fact, he pleaded guilty to a total of 39 charges of rape and attempted aggravated rape.

In at least one case, he terminated the pregnancies to avoid being the father of his own grandchild.

What makes the case outstanding is that he already has 10 wives (6 via “nikah muta’ah”) and 64 children (some newsreports say 66).

What can be worse than that? Well, High Court Judge Tay Wong Kwang added that “the mothers of the girls had somehow been persuaded by the accused that what he was doing was right“. That means that the girls also lost the one and only possible escape route in the house.

The guy called himself an ustaz (religious teacher) and committed the crimes for a period longer than a year (December 2003 – June 2005). He did them in one of the rooms of the 3 jumbo flats he owned.

The accused has about an equal number of sons and daughters.

Apparently the guy is bespectacled, has a small stature and greying hair. He looked calm while the charges were being read.

Fluent in Arabic, he distorted the Al-Quran (surah Al-Mukminin) to say that he had “absolute right on his children which allowed him to have sex with them.”

His day of reckoning started when one of his victims filed a police report on 24th June 2005 after complaining to a friend. His father was arrested the next day.

Amazingly, defence lawyer Harold Seet said that the guy committed the crimes due to financial difficulties and to prevent his daugthers from mixing with boys. He had the strange idea that if he could satisfy the sexual desires of his daughters, they would not want to mix with other guys.

Sickeningly, he called them into a room one by one, while his other wives and children waited outside and helplessly hearing their screams.

Nobody dared to complain because of their huge respect to him as the head of the family and at the same time, their religious teacher.

The guy who owned a transportation company apparently switched from being a Sunni Muslim to a Shiite Muslim circa 1988.

The guy and a wife brought one of the pregnant daughters to Batam, Indonesia to have an abortion. While being raped, the daughters bled, they cried and screamed in pain but the father merely said: “just bear with it, it will only be painful for a while.”

Even the wives forced the daughters to give in to their father. After every incident, the wives would hug and praise them for their “sacrifice”. The wives would also act as messengers – they’d summon the selected daughter into a room where their father’d be waiting.

Even if the kids shook their head, their moms would try to convince them that what they’re about to do is their responsibility. If the kids keep refusing, the moms would pretend to look stressed out and feign crying. This tactic proved effective every time.
