The world’s best young vocalists (12 years of age and under)
Update 14th August 2010
After a year, I finally saw the need to update this entry due to Jackie Evancho, who was born 9th April 2000, meaning she’s 10 as at the time of writing this.
The story goes that she started singing just 2 years ago after watching Phantom of the Opera (musical parents: note this!). Singing in the “crossover classical style,” she released her debut LP, Prelude to a Dream, a mere year later.
The following is apparently of her singing Giacomo Puccini’s “O Mio Babbino Caro” in January 2009 when she was 8 years old:
Amateur video, internal mike, most probably no post-production, and already one can detect the startling talent there.
The following is apparently of the audition video she sent to America’s Got Talent:
And of course she performed “O Mio Babbino Caro” again on America’s Got Talent on 10th August 2000, which got the whole musical world buzzing:
Someone mentioned that she’s even better than Charlotte Church at the same age.

Updated September 2009
First it was Bianca Ryan, 11 who won America’s Got Talent in 2006. This video was taken in June 2006. Amazingly powerful voice.
But she’s got serious competition in Charice Pempengco, 12. The video below was posted August 2006. At first I thought she was miming to Whitney Houston! Some people might dismiss her as being a mere Whitney clone, but I think there’s no denying that she’s extremely talented.
Others lower down the ladder:
Hollie Steel (born 1998), who in 2009 aged 10 was one of ten finalists on the 3rd season of the reality show Britain’s Got Talent. In the end she finished sixth. Audition video.
Declan Galbraith (born 1991) who released his first single “Tell Me Why” in September 2002, a few days before his 11 years. A video of him singing it live in December 2002:
Jessica Sanchez (11 yrs old), was in the same season of America’s Got Talent as Bianca Ryan: she didn’t make the finals, but you judge for yourself.
Then I came across Dreamgirls Erica, apparently 9 yrs old in the following video posted in May 2006.

charice is the opposite of bianca’s lack of versatility, voice quality, style, projection, good deliberation and ability to belt out in tune. bianca only won the AGT because of her age who sang a big song like am i telling you knowing that there were talented contestants that time. am not being biased but if only america voted purely on talent, bianca would have not won with her very monotonous tone. i, too is a musician and i know what a nice voice sound like when someone like charice sings live compared to that of bianca’s, no comparison at all.
i agree with cecilia on this one. lot of artists don’t sound as good as their cds when they sing live. it’s all fixed in the studio. if i have to judge charice and bianca who is the best young vocalist, i’d say charice. i listened to her own rendition of am i telling you when she was in korea, that was a live performance and man, she was amazingly unbelievably fun to watch perform. i am just being honest in my opinion, the credit should go to charice.
watch how charice outsang beyonce when she sang beyonce’s song “listen” better than beyonce’s rendition. and listen how she hit the high note in tune while beyonce didn’t. funny.
Cecilia & Bridge: thanks for your insights.
