Why Phillip Garrido is not the American Fritzl

The case in a nutshell: on 10th June 1991 convicted rapist Phillip Garrido, 58 abducted Jaycee Lee Dugard, then 11 who was on her way to school. 18 years later, on 26th August 2009 Garrido was exposed by chance.

There have been the British, Colombian, Argentine and Italian Fritzls, and now comes this latest case.

As I wrote earlier, a case is comparable to the original Fritzl if it involves a man who kept at least a daughter (whether adopted or not is immaterial) locked up for at least 20 years while raping her repeatedly.

In Garrido’s case, the girl is not his daughter and he kept her in captivity for less than 20 years.

Of course this is not to say that what he did was not “bad enough” – it was a horrendous crime by any measure, and the way he defended his actions was disturbingly bizarre.

I am only saying that by the yardstick set by the original Fritzl and 4 other “Fritzls”, Garrido did not make the grade.

Note: Garrido is apparently a religious fanatic but I wouldn’t rule out investigators discovering sexy adult costumes in his home.

well, but Garrido shares the same method as Fritzl.. and 18 years of confinement is long enough to qualify him as the American Fritzl… the only difference – the victim is not his daughter or adopted daughter… one suggested punishment for him…. lock him in a dungeon for 18 years and ask the world’s most brutal sodomiser to sodomize him continuosly or put Garrido on a Tomahawk missile and then fired straight into hell!!!

I disagree. Not only did Garrido refer to Jaycee as his daughter, Jaycee has stated she viewed Garrido as her father before viewing him as her husband after her first pregnancy.

The first major difference is that, while Phillip Garrido raped Jaycee for his own pleasure, he got her pregnant to provide Nancy with children. Rosemarie was, while probably suspicious of the rapes prior to Elizabeth’s dissapearance, unaware that Joseph was the father of children she was being presented with.

The second is that, while Elizabeth never accepted Joseph as husband, or even that the relationship was loving. Jaycee, in a classic Rape of the Sabines reaction, eventually viewed even the earlier rapes while in the 2 to 3 years she was sequestered in the windowless soundproof recording studio/rape chamber, as acts of love. After all, she wouldn’t have her daughters without these rapes.

Furthermore, while Elizabeth was truly the sister of her children, she always viewed them as her children, never her sisters and brothers, thus denying in her mind any right of paternity Joseph might have, while Jaycee accepted her role as sister to her own children.
