While the fat paychecks of Hollywood A-list actors/actresses are usually worth it, some of them are grossly overpaid, according to Forbes.

How Forbes arrived at its conclusion:

- take the 40 highest-paid Hollywood movie stars who’ve made at least 3 movies in the last 5 years and have opened in more than 50 cinemas up to 1st May 2011.
- total the production budgets for the 3 films mentioned above
- divide the amount by his/her total salary in the 3 movies, including “back-end” earnings eg, % of ticket sales etc
- compare the end result

At the top of the list is Drew Barrymore.

She has a USD0.40 return on every dollar she’s paid.

Even 2nd placed Eddie Murphy did much better: a USD2.70 return.

The Guardian reported on 6th June 2011 that The Human Centipede (2010) was “proudly” called the most horrific film ever made. It was classified 18, no cuts, for cinema and DVD.

A still from the movie

It tells the story of 2 American girls on road journey through Europe. Reaching Germany, their car broke down in the woods. Searching for help, they find a villa. They awoke the next day to find themselves trapped in a basement with a Japanese man. Enter Dr Heiter, who wants to be the first person ever to surgically stitch together people via their gastric systems, anus to mouth, creating the human centipede.

That sounds like a pretty terrible thing to do.

Official trailer

Click here to view the embedded video.

This year, its Dutch director, Tom Six, then created a sequel, The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence), in which a man aroused after watching the first movie goes on to recreate the events of the first film, perhaps in a metal buildings no less. A scene in the movie has him

…wrapping barbed wire around his penis and raping the woman at the end of the centipede, having become aroused by the sight of his victims being forced to defecate into each others’ mouths.

Wow, definitely not a normal summer blockbuster!!

This prompted the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) to ban it outright, one of only 11 movies that have suffered this fate in the board’s almost 100-year history.

BBFC said the first movie was, even though it’s “tasteless and disgusting”, still OK for release because the “centipede was the product of a revolting medical experiment”, but Part II cannot be given the green light because “its own centipede is the object of the protagonist’s depraved sexual fantasy. There is little attempt to portray any of the victims in the film as anything other than objects to be brutalised, degraded and mutilated for the amusement and arousal of the central character, as well as for the pleasure of the audience.”

I suppose the ultimate entertainer would be a person who has won as many as possible of the following awards:

- Academy Award (Oscar) – for outstanding achievements in film
- Emmy Award – for outstanding achievements in TV
- Grammy Award – for outstanding achievements in music
- Tony Award - for outstanding achievements in theatre
Note: the 4 above are the 4 major entertainment awards in American show business. A person who has won all four is regarded to have scored the Grand Slam of show business.

As if the above is not enough, I’d throw in the following:
- Nobel Prize - the closest related to entertainment would be “for outstanding contributions in the field of literature.”
- Pulitzer Prize- for achievements in newspaper and online journalism, literature and musical composition
- Golden Globe Award – presented by the 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) to recognize excellence in film and television, both domestic and foreign.
- The Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival
- The Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival
- The Palme d’Or (“Golden Palm”) at the Cannes Film Festival
Note: The 3 above, called The Big Three, are the most prestigious film festivals in the world, of which even The Toronto International Film Festival, North America’s most popular and most prestigious, is not part of.

So, has any human ever won all those?

No, not yet.

The closest is Marvin Hamlisch (born 1944), a composer, who has won 3 Oscars, 4 Emmys, 4 Grammys, 1 Tony, 1 Pulitzer and 2 Golden Globes.

Full list:

Academy Awards (Oscars):

1. 1973: Best Music, Original Dramatic Score – The Way We Were
2. 1973: Best Music, Original Song – The Way We Were
3. 1973: Best Music, Scoring Original Song Score and/or Adaptation – The Sting

Emmy Awards:

1. 1995 : Outstanding Individual Achievement in Music Direction – Barbra Streisand: The Concert
2. 1995 : Outstanding Individual Achievement in Music and Lyrics – Barbra Streisand: The Concert
3. 1999 : Outstanding Music and Lyrics – AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Movies
4. 2001 : Outstanding Music Direction – Timeless: Live in Concert

Grammy Awards:

1. 1974: Song Of The Year – The Way We Were
2. 1974: Best New Artist Of The Year
3. 1974: Best Pop Instrumental Performance – The Entertainer
4. 1974: Album Of Best Original Score Written For A Motion Picture Or A Television Special – The Way We Were

Tony Awards:

1. 1976 : Best Musical Score – A Chorus Line

Pulitzer Prize:

1. 1976: A Chorus Line – Drama

Golden Globe Awards:

1. 1972: Life Is What You Make It – Best Original Song
2. 1974: The Way We Were – Best Original Song

Now, how on earth does one achieve all that in a lifetime? It would be interesting to delve into his family history, how he was brought up etc. At the very least, as a child, for sure he must’ve been surrounded by music and had his vitamins.

UPDATE 30th March 2011

The Daily Chilli reported that the film made RM1 million in 5 days. Hence it’s broken even in about a week.

Now the inevitable question is, will it break Ngangkung’s record of RM8 million?

————————————-

Whereas Comolot (2007) is the first Malaysian short film which deals with homosexuality, Dalam Botol [literally, In A Bottle] is the first feature film on the subject approved for showing on the big screen by the Malaysian authorities.

Trailer:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Scheduled for screening February 2011.

Plot: a man undergoes a sex change operation in order to please his male lover. Instead, the lover abandons him.

Director: Raja Azmi Raja Sulaiman

Cost: more than RM1 million

However, if you’re looking for scenes reminiscent of Brokeback Mountain, you’d be disappointed. The leads never kiss and the only hint that the wild thing has taken place is in a scene where a man, clad in his underwear, gets out of bed while his male partner is suggested to be sleeping naked under a blanket, although of course if he was wearing wrestling apparel underneath we’ll never know for sure.

Basically, Malaysia is not yet ready for a Malaysian movie about “two gay men who meet, fall in love and live happily ever after.”

IMHO, it must be that one particular scene in Predator (1987), when Blain Cooper (played by Jesse Ventura), the Vietnam vet-Slouch hat wearing-tobacco chewing-modified M134 minigun toting hard man was killed when he was shot in the neck, then the back by the Predator, an alien killing machine so effective you’d never get that disability insurance if the insurers knew who you’re up against.

Everybody in the special forces team led by Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) heard the commotion, and raced to the scene.

First in was Mac Eliot (played by Bill Duke), Blain’s close buddy since Vietnam. Upon discovering his friend’s body, and seeing for himself the Predator which “blinked” at him, engulfed in rage, he used his own gun to shoot at the alien, injuring it as it ran away.

Finishing his round, Mac threw away his cap, picked up Blain’s minigun, which Blain used to call “Ol’ Painless”, and continued shooting. Soon the others joined him in the shooting craze, with Mac screaming at all times, resulting in the jungle before them being cleared.

The end of the scene, where the others had stopped shooting while Mac’s spent minigun was still spinning and his priceless facial expression is simply unforgettable.

“Dunno Y … Na Jaane Kyun” or “Don’t Know Why” is not your usual “3 ekar” Bollywood movie. It is the Asian version of Brokeback Mountain, with “serious and explicit relationship between two men.”

Hmm… definitely controversial. And the actors must’ve been busy ensuring they’re in top cosmetic condition, a blackhead extractor one of the tools of the trade.

Scheduled for release in May 2010, it fill feature the first male gay kiss in a mainstream Indian film, and the director, Sanjay Sharma expects it to pass through censors, because in 2009 a High Court ruling basically made homosexuality legal in India. Never mind that same-sex intimate relationships are still very much taboo in India, and Asia in general.

One of the male leads is played by Kapil Sharma (the director’s brother), who’s apparently straight, and had the following to say about the kissing scene:

Me and my co-actor were hesitant and feeling somewhat odd about the whole thing but the director told us to be sincere in our role. Added to that, during my first scene – a gay party – my parents turned up on set. I was wearing these hot shorts and a jacket. These drag queens were all around me so that was definitely very awkward. But, after three or four days I became immune to who was there.

The plot revolves around a male model who goes to Mumbai to seek his fortune, where he met, and starts a relationship with another guy.

In 2004, Bravo, the American cable television channel showcased its 100 Scariest Movie Moments, “the most bone-chilling moments in cinematic history” featuring interviews from “horror experts.” Then in 2006 the Chicago Film Critics Association released their list of the 100 Scariest Movies of All-Time.

World-renowned horror classics appear near the top in both lists, but the question remains: what is the scariest movie of all time?

Well, “The Exorcist” (1973) placed 3rd in Bravo’s list and 2nd in Chicago’s list, thus can be called the greatest scream-fest ever. It is rated 8.1/10 and the 186th greatest movie of all time at the Internet Movie Database (IMDB). Given the maximum 4 stars by renowned film reviewer Roger Ebert.

Trailer:

Click here to view the embedded video.

But wait, “Psycho” (1960) placed 4th in Bravo’s list but topped Chicago’s list, hence equal to the task. It is rated 8.7/10 and the 22nd greatest movie of all time at IMDB. Put in the “Great Movies” category by renowned film reviewer Roger Ebert. So if you consider IMDB as the tiebreaker, “Psycho” would be the most frightening film ever.

The infamous shower scene:

Meanwhile, “Jaws” (1975) which topped Bravo’s list only placed 6th in Chicago’s list. It is rated 8.3/10 and the 106th greatest movie of all time at IMDB.

Honourable mention goes to “Alien” (1979) which placed 2nd in Bravo’s list and 4th in Chicago’s list. It is rated 8.5/10 and the 46th greatest movie of all time at IMDB.

The abovenamed 4 are the only movies with a total placenumber of less than 10. Even the modern classic “Silence Of The Lambs” (1991) has a total placenumber of 22.

Personally, I have watched all five, and found “The Exorcist” to be the one I wouldn’t want to watch alone on televisions at night.
